Today's Eight-Ball Award Ceremony.

What a thrill it is to be able to present today's Eight-Ball award! My usual source of Eight-Balls was in fact a source of good common sense today. The Post Crescent editorialized in favor of voter-id, ran a good call (which I blogged earlier today), and ran a Robert Meyer letter (always a good thing). So no luck there. Then I went to Dummocrats and spotted this:

"The pope was the world's leading sexist," Gaylor said in a statement issued today. "Why should Wisconsin women be expected to revere his anti-woman, antediluvian teachings?" The pope also had been critical of gay marriages, the statement noted.

"Let's reserve the honor of half-staff for true American heroes," Gaylor said.

On Monday, the Freedom From Religion Foundation issued a lengthy criticism entitled "the pope has no vestments." That statement assailed his position against abortion, contraception, sterilization, women's rights, divorce, stem cell research and gay rights.

"Sure, he finally admitted Galileo should not have been condemned by the church, some 350 years too late," the foundation's statement said.

"True, he opposed capital punishment, as most freethinkers do. But think of the capital punishment, slaughters, the witch-burning, purges, tortures and inquisitions committed by the Roman Catholic Church and its followers through history."

The sheer stupidity and hostility in the above statement is stunning!

Religion has been the motive for some bad things, there is no disputing that. Religion has also been the wellspring of much that is good. The drive to end slavery and segregation were both rooted in religious teachings. Hospitals, how many have their names starting with: St. or have a name that obviously connects them to a religious institution? Only now that the hospital business is becoming profitable do we find non-religious affiliated hospitals arising.

No Ms. Gaylor whine, moan, complain, disparage all you want. All it amounts to is the noise a barking dog makes, the caravan continues on.

One last comment before I hand out the award. Ms. Gaylor your followers are in the thousands. The number of the Pope's are 6 orders of magnitude larger than yours. We pray for you and your group.

Congratulations Ms. Gaylor! You and your band of sourpusses are today's recipients of the Eight Ball Award!
