Crunchy Conservatism.

Rod Dreher formerly of National Review and currently with some newspaper in Texas just had a book come out. He plants the flag for a new strain of conservatism called crunchy conservatism. He found him and his family going to the types of food-stores and places dominated by leftists. He began to wonder about this and came to the conclusion most conservatives are driven by consumerism and hence miss out on the good life. That is, most conservatives are too busy to stop and smell the roses.

This thesis of his Rod claims rings with many conservatives who wrote him saying "me too!, so he wrote a book on it. I had signed up for a mailing list he setup for the point of discussing crunchy conism but the folder I set up for it has two notes. One note from Rod to the list, one note in response and that is it.

Mr. Dreher condemns consumerism but I think that is wrong. I think it is fadishness we should be wary of. All people should make thoughtful choices about what it is they like, what it is they don't like, what is they do, and eat. That is the deeper channel of what Mr. Dreher is getting at.

The Empress and I like to cook and like to get as close to raw foods as we can. However, we don't always have time and drive for it, so we resort to a TV dinner or Banquet chicken from time to time. There is more to crunch conism than just food but speaking of food! It is dinner time.

What's for dinner? Scalloped potatoes and ham. A friend gave us a spiral ham sometime ago and we need to come up with meals that use up large amounts of ham at a crack. So, we made up a dish of scalloped potatoes and ham. Not from a box, but from real potatoes, butter, milk, etc.
