OSM Finally Steers a Visitor Blogger Beer Way!

Just tonight Blogger Beer received its first visitor from Pajamas (formerly known as Pajamas then Open Source Media and once again Pajamas). About time!

I submitted the note to them about the UBL being killed in the quake story I noted more than a month ago that Harry Reid is catching grief for. We'll see if anyone notices this time.

Good Night.

Headrolling and Eyeslapping!

Hehehehe,

You'd think a cable news channel with Bill O'Reilly who has been saying that Christmas is under attack and that he doesn't think it's right and then you have John Gibson who has a published book titled, The War on Christmas: How the Liberal Plot to Ban the Sacred Christian Holiday Is Worse Than You Thought would be smart enough to have Christmas tree ornaments for sale.
Source: The Jawa Report - Fox News Holiday Ornaments.

You know one of Bill O'Reilly's pet causes is the defense of keeping Christmas in Christmas (forget the larger and more important issue of keeping Christ in Christmas). Well, what does the Jawa Report Find? They find Fox News selling Fox News Holiday ornaments and yes folks this includes The O'Reilly Factor Holiday Ornaments.

Shame on you Fox News and Bill O'Reilly for allowing this to happen. Explain yourselves right quickly, then correct it lest ye be accused of hypocrisy.

Note to lefties and to Krazy Kos Kiddies. No pass being given to Fox News here, unlike you we don't see FNC as a hard right organization we see them as centrist money seekers closer to the truth than CNN, MSNBC et al.

Not A Secret.

Michelle Malkin passes on how Harry Reid supposedly leaked classified intelligence.

Well, I do believe Harry Reid not be very bright and he is eminently worthy of criticism but this is not a case where he should be criticized.

In fact this is all very frustrating as I reported this very story a LONG ago.

One of 45,000? Osama Bin Laden Dead in Quake? published on October 20, 2005.

Note I say:
Yes, I agree with the Mr. Hoffman's assessment, we will never know. Absent a capture or him being killed by one of our guys, Mr. Bin Laden is likely to die a quiet and anonymous death. This is hardly unprecedented remember the Israelis put in a lot of effort to track down and arrest Josef Mengele but he too died an old man's death. We are not out to "impeach" Bin Laden we are out to end what he started, Al-Qaida started with him but does not end with him.
Source: Blogger Beer - One of 45,000? Osama Bin Laden Dead in Quake?

Now, the source of my information was the Daily Times an English paper from Pakistan. Heap it on Harry for many reasons but not for talking about OBL being dead in the quake. Even I knew the story and was on top of it by more than a month now.

What a Way To Wakeup!

Good Morning,

Tuned in WImP (Wisconsin Public) Radio as the radio station on the clock radio. I woke up to a story by WImP (as opposed to NPR) about how Mike Ellis may run for governor of Wisconsin.

Mr. Ellis (who is my state senator) is a huge proponent of campaign finance reform. In fact, he sorta indicates he will not run for anything else until campaign finance reform is passes in Wisconsin. Well, I hope this means his senate job is for life. I don't want government getting more control over the means of getting into government, how so called "progressive" types think this is a good idea is beyond me.

BTW, WImP radio is way beyond reporting and is practically pushing Senator Ellis to run for governor.

Promises Promises Promises.

This may seem a little whiney.

However, there are two Wisconsin bloggers who have issued promises to blogroll Blogger Beer and have yet to do so. I will not name names, but please can you follow up on those promises?

Thanks

No, not what you think.

Our Policies.

The left is quick to blame terrorism on their reaction to our policies. Those who support the war on terror and the President's approach generally will say no it is not due to our policies but due to our love of liberty.

Well, the left is right. Our policies are designed around our love of liberty and the terrorists policies are designed in opposition to liberty. We need to turn this argument against the left.

Israel. How many Jews are in the Palestinian Authority? Hahaha. How many Arabs are in the Kennesset? While I can not recall (and am not going to dig up the answer now) exactly I do recall there being a dozen or so. As a Palestinian once noted calling Yasser Arafat a pig within earshot of a PA policeman or soldier would have landed him in a PA jail being beaten. Calling Ariel Sharon a pig to an Israeli soldier would have gotten a comment along the lines "Yeah, so go tell him yourself".

Surely, the judge who is threatened by a criminal whine how it is the fault of our policies that bring the threat on?

The Japanese attacked us due to our policies against their aggression in China.

WTF Version X.

What was that we saw from Philadelphia today?

This Packer team seems to be one that finds a way to lose.

Welcome To Boghie on Your Six!

First of all we must accept that Iraq is a focal point in the region. The eyes of modern Islam turn to Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Iran for guidance. Prior to 2003 there was an axis of Sunni militancy consisting of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Syria that fermented terror to expand their variant of Islam on the edge of the proverbial sword. Iran competed aggressively to promote their own variant. Please review a map to see the geographical significance of Iraq. Please note the annual pilgrimages to Najaf as a demonstration of the religious significance of Iraq. Please study your texts on Babylon, Asyria, and the Abbasid Caliphate centered in Baghdad as examples of historical significance.
Source: Boghie on Your Six - Winning the War on Terror...

This is spot on. The tides that are Sunni Islam and Shi'ite Islam clash in Iraq. To think this fight makes either Islamic variant more moderate is not correct. Lately the two variants have stalemated each other and the radicals are lashing out at a common enemy, the non-Islamic.

Boghie finished by asking a question of
the Left, are you proud of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Dresden, Stalin's gulags, and the Iron Curtain? Dithering in the 1930s resulted in invasive surgery in the 1940s. Back then it was the Paleolithic Right, now it is the Conflicted Left. Do you want your generation to be remembered as we remember Charles Lindberg, and Henry Ford, and even grand pappa Bush. I hope not...

Beating Me To The Thought.

Donald Sensing at Winds of Change & Demosophist engage in speculating a deeper strategy to the shot that launched the Murtha Maneuver.

It is something that struck me as plausible. First, all know a third Iraqi election is in the offing and from a wide variety of open source material we know the Pentagon is planning on reducing overall troop strength in Iraq. I went to my usual sources for more information on this and there is nothing very cut and dried. However, I heard one report about a division coming out of Iraq and only one brigade of the division that was scheduled to replace the outgoing division is going to be in Kuwait the other two brigades are not deploying.

The upshot is US troop numbers are going to be reduced. It is obvious we can not be there in large numbers forever.

This all got me to thinking. Murtha and some of the other Dems may be talking about troop withdrawal right now in order to get ahead of the curve so to speak. They can see the plans to start drawing down the number of our soldiers so they start making noise about bring the troops home, that way they can attempt to take credit spurring the Bush administration to get the troops home. It was a thought.

I don't buy it. Everyone can see if things start to get bad again then the flow of troops will reverse the Democrats can not bring sufficient pressure to bear at the moment after all how many Democrats voted for Murtha's resolution (don't tell me it wasn't his, the exact text may have not been Murtha's but the sentiment was)?

Demosophist too doubts the Democrats are engaging in a deep ruse
2. It'd be easy to deflect such a strategy by simply observing, loudly and repeatedly, that what the President preserved was our discretion, in case conditions demanded a different draw-down rate. Yes, he always intended to draw down. He just wanted to keep our options open, as would any good Commander in Chief. Therefore a fixed draw-down wasn't a bad plan because the rate was either too fast or too slow, but because it was fixed: non-modifiable.
Source: The Jawa Report - Are the Democrats Fox Crazy?

Perhaps the Left has been as successful as they claim to be in planting doubt (or perhaps FUD) into people's minds about the reasons for going into Iraq. However, most people know what cutting and running means. Osama Bin Laden and his cohorts certainly know what it means.

Saturday Coming.

The morning came way too early today.

I had a hard time at work today staying awake (especially afternoon) at work and it did not help the cafeteria was closed so no Mountain Dew to help me over the early afternoon duldrums. Then it started to snow.

Now normally it takes me 1 hr - 40 min (or so) to get home, tonight it took 2 hr 30 min (or so). Saw one SUV on its roof but it didn't look like anyone was hurt. There were some other ditch dwellers and wreckers about. The roads were not all that bad but they were not all that good either.

Ahhhh Saturday coming.

The UNternet.

It appears that for now the UN has ceased its attempt to wrest control of the Internet from the United States non-controlling control.

Folks, this is to be resisted with all our might. The Internet's magic and wonder is its wild and wooly ways. The problem for the UN is these wild and wooly ways upset the rabble that is the UN. Some of the loudest voices in trying to turn the Internet into the UNternet (I came up with this term independently from others but I am not the only one using the term in this fashion) are governments like Saudia Arabia, China, Iran, etc.

Its bad enough these nations monopolize Internet access and therefore are already in a powerful position to control Internet access in their nations but now they want to emplace policies that cause harm to the Internet as a whole?

We need to make sure control of the Internet stays in its current state away from the dictating hands of petty tyrants who want to shut down sites that say bad things about them.
One of the reasons the Internet has been so successful is that it has so far escaped the restraints of Filipino judges, Tunisian government officials and United Nations bureaucrats. Addresses which are published onto the root servers can be resolved and their content displayed, subject to the restrictions of their publishers. The United States, by refusing to regulate the Internet, has occupied the position of an information central banker maintaining the coin of the realm. If lower court Filipino judges and assorted bureaucrats get their way, the pathways of the Internet will be subject to bureaucratic gatekeeping, conducted in the name of "governance". But the proper word would be debasement.

Indeed and what is going on is an attempt to counterfeit those coins.

Busy Busy Busy.

Greetings All,

Haven't forgot about you. As you know my weeks give me little time for doing things at home. Tonight's major mission is to get the videocam playing nicely with the computer again. I recall about a year ago doing it but I can not remember the exact steps so I am struggling with that right now. Thursday is fairly open as is the weekend.

Hang in there till then.

Zoinks! Is Zarqawi Assuming Room Temperature?

A little visit to OSM led me to go to Iraq The Model.

Zarqawi probably killed!
According to these two sources, Iraqi and US military forces in Mosul think that Zarqawi, al-Qaeda leader in Iraq was possibly killed in a raid on a house where members of al-Qaeda were holding a meeting.
Al-Mada paper said that terrorists hiding in a house fired back at American and Iraqi troops that were surrounding the house in a battle that lasted from dawn to noon on Saturday (Jerusalem Post said it was Sunday)`after receiving intelligence about a meeting for senior al-Qaeda members.
Source: Iraq The Model - Zarqawi probably killed!
Wait and see, wait and see.

Will it stop the insurgency? In the short-term it will not, in the medium to long terms this remains to be seen. The structures Zarqawi setup should be able to stand without their head for sometime but if they can not find anyone as capable as Zarqawi to take over then decay will set in.

Sometimes too much emphasis is put on a leader. However, we must not over-counter by then deemphasizing the need for competent leadership.

Also, the Al-Qaida group of terrorists are only one of three groups.

Israel == Philippines?

I picked up the 9/11 Report again. Reading through the lifestory of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed reveals an interesting tidbit.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the guy who dreamt up the operation that was carried out on 9/11, 2001. He was working of an idea he hatched in the Philippines. I recall one of the manifestations of that idea. The bombing of a Philippines Airline Flight from Manila to Japan, I recall reading about the event in The Gulf News little did we know how that event would lead to the devestation we saw on 9/11.

Anyway, KSM's original plan was very grand. His plan called for the hijacking and missilification of about one dozen airliners and he himself would hijack a plane and after the other planes hit home, he would force the plane he was on to land, kill the men on board and then denounce the US for its support of, Israel and the Philippines. Page 153-154 The 9/11 Commission Report

The 9/11 Commission Report spends a fair amount of time talking about KSM's links to Jemmah Islamiya the terror group that operates through Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Anyway

This Story...

Is popping up like popcorn throughout the blogosphere.

LGF and The Jawa Report are passing on reports that eight high-level AQ leaders in Iraq went boom today. They were surrounded by US forces and those forces were about to enter and then boom. A name being passed around as a member of those eight slodey-dopes is Abu Musab Zarqawi but we will have to wait and see.

The Imminency of a Threat.

Going over the blog by Wretchard on pre-OIF intelligence I was struck by the following comparison that came into my head.

Remember Hurricane Katrina? Many leftists (and one doesn't have to go to the extreme edge, it is a fairly mainstream leftist notion) blame Hurricane Katrina on President Bush's refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocols, that global warming will cause more and stronger hurricanes than in the past. The leftists note an uptick in both hurricane frequency and strength as proof of what happens when Kyoto doesn't get signed. So, the left is making a direct threat connection between failure to sign the Kyoto Protocols and damage to our Atlantic and Gulf coasts.

Now, we had a situation where a man using the nation he subjugated started two wars with neighbors. Instigated Palestinian suicide murderers, gassed his own population, was pursuing nuclear weapons, and had it out for the USA.

Now to be sure the threat of hurricanes on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts (in addition to Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean islands as a whole) is real and imminent. But, is the signing of a silly piece of paper going to do anything about that threat? The left is convinced it will (if so then why didn't Bill Clinton submit the protocols for senatorial approval? Perhaps because the US Senate said 95-0 it did not like the protocols) The left says hurricane frequency and strength are rising, perhaps but many hurricane experts say the hurricane numbers are returning to norms established early last century. That is perhaps it was the last thirty (or so) years of less frequent and strong hurricanes that were out of the norm.

Now, yesterday I quoted a piece by Michael Ledeen talking of a British soldier who spared the life a wounded German corporal in WWI. That corporal was none other than Adolf Hitler. The lessons of Europe's treatment of Hitler are very educational and all of us are should pay attention to what those are. Of course, we can all forgive the British soldier for his act of mercy.

The left is fond of saying Saddam was no threat to the USA and therefore should not have been disturbed. Saddam proved himself to be unpredictable and a dangerous man. Was he a threat? Yes he was. Was he an imminent and dangerous threat? No, but is it not cheaper to fix a small problem than a large problem?
They hatched a plot to arrest Hitler the very moment he gave the actual invasion order. According to their plan, Berlin would be sealed off by special Army units to prevent the SS from interfering. Other units, aided by anti-Nazis in the Berlin Police, would seize important government buildings while top Nazis such as Göring, Goebbels and Himmler would be arrested. Assuming this all worked, Hitler would be hauled before a special court and charged with leading Germany toward a military disaster.

But there was one big if in this whole scenario. The plan would only work if both England and France maintained a belligerent attitude toward Hitler and made it known to the world that they would fight to preserve the little Czech republic. This would serve to convince the German people that certain defeat awaited Germany if it attacked Czechoslovakia and would justify the overthrow of Hitler.

To insure that Britain and France understood how high the stakes were, the conspirators sent agents to England to secretly inform Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain that Hitler was planning to attack Czechoslovakia. They also informed the British of their intentions to overthrow Hitler and requested that both Britain and France adopt an openly aggressive stance toward Hitler.

However, major problems prevented this from happening. First, the messengers were not taken seriously by the British who found themselves unable to trust the same Germany Army which had been steadfastly aiding Hitler since his takeover of power in 1933. Secondly, Prime Minister Chamberlain had his own peace agenda in mind and was willing to negotiate to the hilt to prevent another European war.
Source: The History Place - The Triumph of Hitler
In the end
Upon arriving back home in London, Chamberlain declared: "The settlement of the Czechoslovakian problem which has now been achieved is in my view only the prelude to a larger settlement in which all Europe may find peace."

Few politicians in England disagreed. Winston Churchill voiced the loudest single protest, calling the Munich Agreement "a total, unmitigated defeat."

Back in Germany, the Army generals who had been preparing to oust Hitler gave up in complete dismay. All plans concerning the overthrow of the Führer were shelved. The generals now resigned themselves to follow Hitler into the abyss that lay ahead for Germany.

On Saturday, October 1, the German Army rolled into the Sudetenland on schedule. Many of the Czechs living there fled their homes in panic with only the clothes on their back.

Once again Hitler had gotten everything he wanted without firing a single shot. Incredibly, this time he would have welcomed a fight. Somewhat exasperated, he said: "I did not think it possible that Czechoslovakia would be virtually served up to me on a plate by her friends." [emphasis added]
Source: The History Place - The Triumph of Hitler
Resorting to bloodshed and war is never a light option but it is quite clear Chamberlain & Daladier's deal here was nothing but a fools bargain save a few now and cast to death millions later is what it amounted to. Do you wait until a threat is mortal until you try to do something about it? Did the Allies give Hitler what he wanted? No, but they should have.

Interesting: Pre-OIF Intelligence.

Wretchard blogs about pre-OIF intelligence. I take it the blog he posted is the homework he is turning in for Professor Reynold's assignment. ;-)

Wretchard notes the intelligence being developed in the run up to the war was focused on what Iraq had in terms of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons to develop a casus belli. Instead he implies a much better effort would have been on gaining intelligence about the plans the Baathists had for the post invasion period.
Although the pre-war intelligence estimates of Iraq now turn out to be inadequate in many ways, its principal defect was that it attempted to measure the wrong thing. It ought to have focused on the extent to which Iraqi Ba'athists and regional terror groups would have mounted a Lebanon or West Bank type defense; identified the key hurdles in creating a replacement Iraqi state; and specified the requirements necessary to win this campaign in an impressive and overwhelming manner in order to demonstrate to the rogue state audience what the consequences of aggression against the United States were. But this subject was verboten, and so instead intelligence spoke to the strategically irrelevant minutiae of Yellowcake and centrifuges, casting a wavering light, like the drunk searching for a lost coin in the story, not in the area where it would be found but in the only place he could shine a beam.
Source: The Belmont Club - Pre-war Intelligence
Of course, one of the whines the left makes is Saddam Hussein was no threat to the US, therefore we should not have attacked him.
Consider the story of Henry Tandey, a British infantryman in the Duke of Wellington Regiment in the First World War. On September 28, 1918, Tandey participated in an attack against enemy trenches near the small French town of Marcoing. The British carried the day, and as they advanced, Tandey Cautiously peered into a trench. He saw an enemy soldier, a corporal, lying bleeding on the ground. It would have been easy for Tandey to finish off his enemy, as he had killed many that day; Tandey had played an heroic role in the battle and later was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest wartime decoration, for his great courage. But he felt it was wrong to shoot an injured man, and he spared the corporal's life.

In 1940, during the Nazi bombardment of Coventry, when Tandey worked as a security guard at the Triumph automobile factory, he gnashed his teeth. "Had I known what that corporal was going to become! God knows how sad I am that I spared him." The corporal was Adolf Hitler. Tandey's human gesture had led to the deaths of millions of people and, in a bitter irony of military destiny, had placed his own life at the mercy of the monster whose life he could have taken.
Source: National Review Michael Ledeen WWMD?
I agree with Wretchard. The pre-OIF intelligence was not a failure for what it failed to predict but for what it failed to focus on. If the nature of the new enemy and the historical lessons on the differences between immediate threats and looming threats is not enough than what is?

Yet Another Silly Argument.

Yes another argument busting blog.

An horrible event happens to some poor wretch lets call J. Furthermore lets stipulate that whatever it is that happened to J is an issue that has been hotly debated off and on over an extended period of time. Political leader X then steps up and proposes a law or an initiative to make sure whatever happened to J is stopped. X's opponent C then accuses X of using J and J's horrible event to further X's career. Follow?

Probably not but I'll give you a real world event that illustrates what I am talking about. Columbine. After Columbine President Clinton proposed some more gun control and his opponents (and gun control's opponents) then accused President Clinton of exploiting Columbine to pursue a political agenda. Duh! Again cheap populism.

What's the alternative? You all probably know the story. A couple is at the kitchen table and the wife says to the husband fix the hole in the roof! The husband says Why? Its not raining, nothing is being hurt. The wife gives up. Five days later they are in their kitchen again and it is raining and the drops are going drip-drip-drip-drip on their heads. The wife complains and demands her husband fix the roof. He then says but honey, I can't its raining! (no this was not a transcription of a conversation between Claudia and Marcus).

Now, don't get me wrong. I am definitely no fan of the mediocrity we call President Clinton nor does this owner of guns and (occasional) hunter arguing for gun control here. I am arguing for better argumentation.

Arguments such as the one I illustrate may work a couple of times but sooner or later the argument will fail to persuade (rightly so, it is more ad-hominem than anything).

Playing Politics With X.

One common argument often used in debates that drives me crazy is "Stop playing politics over issue X". Both sides use this argument.

Sean Hannity often bemoans how the Democrats are playing politics over the way in Iraq and on Terror. Well, duh! After all, the Democrats are politicians. This is just a whine that others do not see the debate as you do. Well, yeah I would be very glad if the left would see things the way we do but it isn't going to happen in the near term and this is why politics have evolved.

In fact I would say the comment of "Stop playing politics over issue X" is cheap populism.

Kevin Is Rolling Over...

Wait a minute, Kevin is still alive, well, and kicking. I refer to Kevin from Lakeshore Laments.

LGF features a story that refers to UW Eau Claire:
Since its original development in the mid-1990s, the Tunnel of Oppression has become a nationally recognized program offered at a number of college campuses including The Ohio State University, the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, [emphasis added] and The University of Nevada Las Vegas. Some campuses use it as an element of diversity training within the residence halls while others have fully incorporated the idea into their campus programming efforts. Campuses have implemented the program in various ways, incorporated various themes, and have realized varying levels of success. Following the interactive portion of the Tunnel, many campuses offer students an outlet for processing the activity including panel discussions with faculty and staff members.

Sounds very much like South Park's Museum of Diversity.

I loved the scene where a guy was smoking a cigarette boy did the "Museum of Diversity" staff unload on that guy. Get out of here "dirty lungs".

The Murtha Maneuver: A Study.

What a night it was last night for political geeks like me.

First the resolution proffered by Rep. Hunter (R-CA) was soundly defeated and only three Democrats voted for it. There were a handful of Democrats and one Independent who did not vote on the measure.

Now, the Democrats main line of attack was the resolution being voted on was not Murtha's and was a cheap political stunt (OMG: Politicians playing politics! There ought to be a law.). Murtha's resolution and the one Duncan Hunter offered were essentially identical and the one offered matches Murtha's public comments much closer than the one Murtha was trying to get considered. Yes,
Why didn't the Republicans just use Murtha's language? If all but three Democrats wanted to claim that "is hereby terminated" means something other than immediate withdrawal, fine. I think what would have emerged is that the only distinction is that logistics will require that the withdrawal take a certain amount of time, and will not, in that sense, be "immediate." The Democrats would have had to say what they really think about Iraq, or at least pretend to. Instead, they were given an easy out. Since the Republican resolution wasn't the same as Murtha's, they could credibly denounce it as a "sham" and their orchestrated votes against it mean nothing at all.
Source: Powerline Blog - Friends, Romans, clowns
Yes, a perfect situation would have been to have voted on Murtha's version and the alternate version actually voted on was a blunder but this is a case of the glass being 7/8ths full for the GOP. The Krazy Kos Kiddies would have been ecstatic with immediate and the Democrats realize immediate is not a good thing.

Now the Democrats and Murtha were and are claiming they did not call for immediate withdrawal but The deployment of United States forces in Iraq, by direction of Congress, is hereby terminated and the forces involved are to be redeployed at the earliest practicable date.Source: Powerline Blog - Friends, Romans, clowns What's the difference?

Remember too the Mainstream Mastodons were reporting Murtha's move as a call for immediate withdrawal and in fact Murtha himself was fond of immediate in press releases and in speeches.
Congressman Murtha did indeed call for immediate withdrawal of US troops...his own words from a press conference a few days ago: "The United States will immediately redeploy — immediately redeploy. No schedule which can be changed, nothing that’s controlled by the Iraqis, this is an immediate redeployment of our American forces because they have become the target." And: "My plan calls for immediate redeployment of U.S. troops (consistent with the safety of U.S. forces)." Reference: here.

And from CongressmanÂ’s Murtha own website: "I believe before the Iraqi elections, scheduled for mid December, the Iraqi people and the emerging government must be put on notice that the United States will immediately redeploy." Reference: here.

Also, the media sure played up MurthaÂ’s original remarks as calling for an "immediate" withdrawal. Consider this CNN headline: "Representative John Murtha Calls for Immediate Troop Withdrawal." Reference: here. Read the whole article...CNN certainly reported Murtha’s comments as a call for "immediate withdrawal."
Source: Powerline Blog - Friends, Romans, clowns

So, the Murtha Maneuver was a smashing success. It shows house Republicans to have some glands and it shows the Democrats to be dishonest about what they want. They want a white flag withdrawal but are afraid (rightly so) to express such sentiments plainly they want to hide in lawyerly murk.

Friday, November 18, 2005

Apparently.

Nanc-eye Pelos-eye has instructed her lambsys to vote no. Kookoonic and a few other Dems will probably disobey but so waht.

The Murtha Maneuver.

What a brilliant stroke by the GOP in the house.

The Democrats have always been able to spout off about pulling out of Iraq and not have to worry about actually putting themselves into a position to commit one way or another. Well, they got a chance to actually put it all on the record. We know the Democrats can talk it up, will they vote it up too or–is it just talk?

My prediction the Murtha measure fails with NO Republicans voting to defeat the measure and about half of voting Democrats voting to defeat the Murtha Measure. I'ld hate to be a wavering Democrat in the house right now. Nancy Pelosi's schnauzers barking in your face to support the Murtha measure would ....I don't know but it would not be nice. Heheh I bet regardless of a House Dems position I bet Nancy's schnauzers are barking at all house Dems in an effort to make sure they stay in line.

Fitzgerald Sits Another Grand Jury.

Reports are out that Patrick Fitzgerald has sat a new grand jury in his investigatory job.

What does this mean? Much and nothing. I am sure quite a few on the left are getting visions of ball & chains (attached to the legs of Karl Rove, the President, the Vice President, et al) in their heads.

It seems rather coincidental this new grand jury is seated just at the time the revelation of Bob Woodward's early knowledge of Valerie Plame came out. In fact there probably is no coincidence and this second grand jury was seated in response to a set of facts that have come out.

Now, the seating of a grand jury does not mean indictment it means investigation and unless you are a Ronnie Earle you don't keep trying until you get the result you like. I am quite certain once again we will have leftists dreaming of a Fitzmas morning and coming out weeks before any further announcements telling us how the whole Bush administration is going to be executed for treason. A much more prudent course of action is to wait and see.

In the days leading up to the Libby indictment people were here telling me how their sources were certain a dozen indictments were coming down. IIRC, Lawrence O'Donnel had nearly two dozen indictments coming down. Sheesh.

My guess, is the focus of this new grand jury is on this person who had a talk with Bob Woodward.

A Vote.

Rep. Murtha's comments on sending the white flag up in Iraq has provoked an all out House vote on the issue.

Okay then time to resist cliches! There are countless one almost wants to spout as a matter of reaction, they come out before you can stop them.

Anyway
WASHINGTON (AP) - House Republicans, sensing an opportunity for political advantage, maneuvered for a quick vote and swift rejection Friday of a Democratic lawmaker's call for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq.

"We want to make sure that we support our troops that are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill. "We will not retreat."

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi had no immediate reaction to the planned vote.

The GOP leadership decided to act little more than 24 hours after Rep. Jack Murtha, a hawkish Democrat with close ties to the military, said the time had come to pull out the troops. By forcing the issue to a vote, Republicans placed many Democrats in a politically unappealing position - whether to side with Murtha and expose themselves to attacks from the White House and congressional Republicans, or whether to oppose him and risk angering the voters that polls show want an end to the conflict.

Murtha's resolution would force the president to withdrawal the nearly 160,000 troops in Iraq "at the earliest predictable date."

Most Republicans oppose Murtha's plan, and even some Democrats have been reluctant to back his position. Republicans were seeking to force Democrats to stand with the respected 30-year congressman or go on the record against his proposal.
Source: MyWay News - House GOP Seeks Quick Vote on Iraq Pullout
Very cute and clever. Time to commit and go on record.

BTW what is with this hawk adjective being applied to Rep. Murtha? He is no more hawkish than John F. Kerry.

He Said What? Where?

I heard of Bill Clinton bad mouthing the Iraq effort and knew he was doing it overseas but I just found out exactly where he did it.

Bill Clinton p!$$e$ on the troops in a place near enough to almost literally p!$$ on the troops. Dubai. Apparently his little stunt was pulled off at the American University of Dubai (AUD). I have a friend (are we still friends Mr. John?) who teaches in Dubai but IIRC it is at the Higher Colleges and not at the AUD.

Funny, in trying to dig up this story on the web I saw quotes from Madeline Allbright essentially saying Clinton is the first Arab American president as well. Well, Ms. Allbright I was in the Middle East during his and your time in office. Let me tell you, he was not all that popular. Recall at that time you and your colleagues in the Clinton Administration talked tough about Iraq and occasionally got rough with Iraq. I also recall reading many letters to the editors denouncing you and the rest of your Zionist colleagues.

Oh, what is it about Bill Clinton and being overseas?

Welcome Nick.

Another Debate.

Real Debate Wisconsin recently blogged on Able Danger and Rep. Curt Weldon's claim Able Danger did foretell an attack.

Representative Curt Weldon has apparently uncovered evidence that the Able Danger team uncovered evidence that a terrorist incident was going to happen at the Yemen port specific to the day the attack on the USS Cole actually occurred.
Source: Real Debate Wisconsin - Able Danger and the USS Cole Connection.

Hmmmm. Real interesting in light of my earlier blog where I say Able Danger must do more than just come up with lists of suspicious folks.

Fanning the Plames.

The Mainstream Mastodons continue to fan the plames, in the hopes they can torch the Bush Administration.

Al Pazeera via Yahoo News reports:
Referring to news accounts about the case, [the National Security Adviser Stephen] Hadley said with a smile, "I've also seen press reports from White House officials saying that I am not one of his sources." He said he would not comment further because the CIA leak case remains under investigation.

Leaving the room, Hadley was asked if his answer amounted to a yes or a no. "It is what it is," he said.

Controversy surrounding the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame's identity showed no signs of abating Thursday, dashing any hopes White House officials had that the investigation was nearing an end.

A group of former intelligence officers urged Bush not to pardon anyone convicted of leaking Plame's name to reporters and to pull security clearances of any White House officials implicated in the investigation.
Source: The AP via Yahoo News -
Hadley Coy on Whether He's Woodward Source
I like that last bit about urging the President not to pardon anyone in this matter.

I tell you, I have a suspicion President Bush will not issue such pardons and these former intelligence officials have nothing at all to do with it. Quite refreshing after the last President's outgoing pardons. Marc Rich being pardoned.

Other than the fact the left and the MSM insist this is a problem I don't see how it is.

Another Day.

See those two key letter? A & D?

Little Green Footballs brings up the Able Danger case again.

I want to reiterate my thoughts on Able Danger. I do not see it as the big deal many make it out to be.

Remember the case is that the AD team using huge amounts of computing power and open data (i.e. data available upon request, that is data that is not private) and came up with a list of people who fit a terrorist profile. Mohd Atta was supposedly on the Able Danger list as were other members of the 9/11-19. There is quite a bit of intrigue going on in this case with those wanting to bring full light upon Able Danger and others who want it kept in the dark.

If all they had was a list of potential terrorists then Able Danger is not that big of a deal. Reports were airline passenger screening software tapped about half of the 9/11-19 for further scrutiny prior to boarding. If they are not going to be questioned in that context why does anyone think there will be action taken against someone if a computer program run turns up names?

I wonder if the CIA will request Justice to investigate this leak
The Washington Post has revealed that the dean of investigative reporting, Robert Woodward, knew the identity of Valerie Plame more than two years ago. Bloggers are going wild.

Of course there will be no call to investigate that leak; after all what good is it if it doesn't damage the President?

The Week.

Has not been a good one.

Contemplating the upcoming opening of a deer season I will miss. Being away from the woman I love, a health that is not in the best state and I am in a hotel blogging on a laptop. I hate laptops. Living in a hotel is not fun when one is not feeling well.

I hate their keyboards and I always have to look around for key combinations. No Fox News, but at least I have wireless high-speed and South Park.

Anyway, soon I will be on a beach with a cold San Miguel.

Good Night.

Rendered Pork Can Not Be Restored.

Wishful thinking on this:
Anyway they say the earmarks for the Alaskan bridges to nowhere have been eliminated form the budget. More to come.
Source: Blogger Beer - CNN Reports

Apparently the money will be used to buy Lear jets for the residents of those islands. Well, probably not but Alaska hardly has problems with money, what is it resident Alaskans get for the oil?

Jonah Goldberg put it all very well
Yes, yes, yes, readers are correct. The Reuters article makes it clear there are no actual savings on the bridge to nowhere. The money now goes to a general grant to the state. And here I thought I was going to have to apologize to the Porkbusters people for this statement:

The porkbusters fight is fun now, but not since early cave men tried to train grizzly bears to give them tongue-baths has a project seemed more obviously doomed to end in disappointment. Expecting Congress — of either party — to give back pork which has already been approved and passed into law is like expecting crack whores to give refunds days after services have been rendered.

Well, as they say, if something is too good to be true then it is.

Ugh,

I know, but the hotel cable service I am forced to watch does not carry Fox News so I am force to watch the Caliphate News Network (aka The Clinton News Network).

September 2005's Greatest Beer.

This man is considering a run for the job that Mark Dayton is quitting (Minnesota's other senator), this is probably going to doom him.

I guess I should not be flabbergasted a leftist actually believes in treason. Of course providing aid and comfort to the Islamist terrorists in Iraq is not treason it is patriotism, and trying to defeat Islamist terrorists and establish a beachhead of liberal governance in the Middle East is treason.
Source: Blogger Beer - A Leftist Actually Believes Treason Is Possible. September 24, 2005
Which leftist was that? Al Franken and this blog happened after his comments on national TV on how the President, Scooter, the Vice President, and Karl Rove were going to be executed for treason.

This was the blog that was seen by over 500 sets of eyes. Of course, it was a trackback to a site that was linked to on Drudge that brought on the avalanche of visitors.

It brought out some commentary by leftists who were gloating how there were going to be dozens of indictments and they were going straight to the top. I responded with facts (the exact nature of the laws in play here) and the fact that it was premature to gloat over a dozen indictments, never did I claim there would be no indictments. As it turns out I was correct, one indictment.

Anyway this ends the greatest hits for Blogger Beer's first year! I will continue with fresh blogs as appropriate and possible. Thanks for reading Blogger Beer!

September's Greatest Beer.

Deals with the Ronnie Earle sham indictments of Tom DeLay. Dr. Rusty Shackleford at the Jawa Report (IIRC, it was his blog and not one of his co-bloggers there) called on Tom DeLay not just to step down from his leadership position but to resign from congress all together.

In response I said:

Now, Tom DeLay has certainly done his share to earn the ire of small government conservatives or perhaps has not done enough to earn their praise. His latest statement on how the budget does not contain enough pork to pay for hurricane relief certainly has a lot of his normal supporters up in arms and perhaps those supporters are on the sidelines now.

Absent a conviction or a plea deal Tom DeLay should not step down from his office for him to do so would reward ... corrupt use of a DA's office.
Source: Blogger Beer Right vs. Right. 9/29/2005.

Now. Dr. Shackleford noted the blog and linked to it and noted I was a loyal (if disagreeing on this point) reader. This then caused me to ask for him to add Blogger Beer to the Jawa Report blogroll, which he did! That was a boost. The Jawa Report to this day remains my #1 link and #1 hard link.

Anyway, the contrast between Ronnie Earle and Patrick Fitzgerald is quite stark. Their professionalism contrast with each other quite a bit. You have a head-hunting publicity seeking DA in Ronnie Earle who abuses his office to bring ruin to his political opponents. That he has persecuted Dems who were not to his liking as he has done so with Republicans, does not make him honest it just adds to his corruptness. Recall, he indicted Kay Bailey Hutchinson after she won her election and the judge threw the case out of court. Not only is Earle persecuting a political opponent his first couple sets of charges were clearly inadequate and like all inventors he just went back to the drawing boards.

Then of course he had to find grand juries that saw things his way or hated Tom DeLay as much as he did. Then don't forget the film he is a star in while persecuting Tom DeLay. All of this means Ronnie Earle is abusing his office and I fully expect the charges will be dismissed.

Patrick Fitzgerald OTOH is nothing that is Ronnie Earle. I will call Ronnie Earle all of the things I do because he is what he is. However, I respect Patrick Fitzgerald and feel he has done the right thing and I suspect he will get a conviction on Libby.

Good Night.

Lawyers.

In an article published in National Review, Robert F. Nagel posits that the problem with our judiciary does not lay with particular trends in constitutional/statutory interpretation, nor does it lay in the fact judges are immersed in a sea of leftist elitism but to the general mindset of the lawyerly class.

Interpretation (in this blog take Interpretation to mean how one decides what the constitution, a given law, or a given contract means), as I have blogged on before can be done in several general ways. It is not necessarily the reading the document and deciphering the text contained in that document. For example, privacy.

In the Constitution there is no explicit right to privacy. Some people then would argue that there is no right to privacy. However, without explicitly referring to privacy the Constitution often defers to individual privacy it is safe to say privacy is an important but unwritten concern of those who wrote the constitution. Now, some of the most controversial bits of jurisprudence are based on privacy. Some will argue this is wrong because there is no explicit right to privacy and others will say the constitution is full of concrete examples of concern for privacy and then generalize from that point. Mr. Nagel believes this is NOT the problem.

According to Nagel the problem is
A third and fuller explanation of judicial activism is so obvious that it is generally ignored. Simply put, people who are put on the Supreme Court are almost always successful lawyers. This means that they tend to be adept at–and therefore not inclined to be skeptical of–the way lawyers and judges think. And the way that lawyers and judges think is one of the basic reasons that we have such a powerful judiciary.
Robert F. Nagel The Problem With the Court National Review Magazine, November 21, 2005 Vol LVII, NO. 21 page 44

Mr. Nagel goes onto explain the power of precedent (aka stare decisis) and how precedent is not just one or two cases. In fact Mr. Nagel argues a fair number of controversial (and prominent) cases could be overturned and the courts would not be altered in any significant way. Mr. Nagel also points out how courts have come to see themselves as arbiters of legitimate (and the degree of legitimacy an interest may have) vs. Illegitimate government interest. Another consequence of lawyerly tendencies has (in Nagel's view) elevated the court to the predominant role in our government.

What then do we look for in a potential justice who properly understands the role of the courts?
...it is necessary to look for those lawyers who are confident enough and independent enough to challenge established patterns of though and to resist deeply ingrained instincts.
Robert F. Nagel The Problem With the Court National Review Magazine, November 21, 2005 Vol LVII, NO. 21 page 44
Mr. Nagel know of tow such individuals and names them. They are not potential Supreme Court nominees they are two sitting Supreme Court justices, the ones vilified by the left Justices Scalia and Thomas.

August's Can of Blogger Beer.

Is here and discusses our government's knowledge of Osama Bin Laden, what he was about, how difficult it is to prevent attacks hinted by vague warnings, and how it is silly to believe President Clinton did not know Al-Qaida was behind the USS Cole bombing.

In the summer of 1998 I was packing up to leave the UAE for good (I would return but my residency there was coming to an end). One day in June I came into the office to do something and found the ole warden notice from our embassy in Abu Dhabi. It warned us that Osama Bin Laden (and I do recall the notice named Osama bin Laden explicitly) was up to something. Then it went on to enumerate (yet again) the standard list of security precautions.

Okay, I get packed up and finally return to the USofA which was in early July. In early August I was up north watching some tv with my brother. The regularly scheduled programming we were watching broke in with a news alert. They announced the bombings in East Africa. The first words out of my mouth were: Osama Bin Laden! Momentarily later they announced the chief suspect Osama Bin Laden!

So, our intelligence agencies had an idea of what OBL was about. Our State Department had an idea of what OBL was about. Now of course, we do not know exactly how much they knew. Anyone can stand up and say I will attack the USA and what does it mean? Is it misinformation? Is he going to hit shipping, an embassy? Where? When? How? With whom? etc etc etc. So, I am not upset they were not able to prevent that attack (I am upset with those who attacked).

But what more did President Clinton want? I do not take him at his word for the above statement after all he supposedly knew enough to shoot some cruise missiles at empty tents in Afghanistan and a factory in The Sudan. Why did he suppose it was any other organization that put together the Cole bombing?
Source: Blogger Beer - Warden Notices and He Knew. August 17, 2005

The blog was touched off by a Belmont Club blog. The essential points of the blog are
  1. A warning that terrorists plan to kidnap jet planes is way too vague to be able to do anything
  2. That President Clinton's claim he knew not who carried out the USS Cole bombing was silliness.
  3. That President Clinton had (or should have, his intelligence agencies and state dept certainly knew of it) similar warnings to what President Bush had about 9/11 prior to the East African embassy bombings.

The WIP, Steven Avery, and Theresa Hallbach.

The Wisconsin Innocence Project (WIP) is an organization affiliated with the University of Wisconsin Law School that works to spring people they suppose wrongly convicted.

One famous case is that of Steven Avery. Mr. Avery was convicted of rape based on the victim's testimony. DNA testing (at the time) was performed and did not prove conclusively one way or the other.

Back in 2003 the WIP was able to get further (and more modern) DNA testing performed on the samples. The WIP with the aid of the new DNA tests was able to obtain a ruling that Mr. Avery did not commit the rape he was serving time for and was released from prison.

We now return to late 2005. Steven Avery is now being charged with the murder (the story is dated before the announcement of the finding of Theresa Hallbach's remains and the official declaration of Avery as a suspect) of Theresa Halbach.

CHILTON, Wis. (AP) - Prosecutors will charge a man wrongly convicted of rape 20 years ago [emphasis added] with killing a 25-year-old woman whose vehicle was found near his home, the Calumet County district attorney said Friday.
Source: WLUK - Avery Will Be Charged

Question for you dear reader (this is intended to spur discussion). What culpability does the WIP have in the death of Theresa Hallbach? None? Some? Much?

2005 July's 12 Pack Contribution.

UNS 7/5/2005 Hollywood CA.

George Wucas Studios is working on a new set of movies. Inspired by the recent vacancy on the Supreme Court, George Wucas is putting together a six movie set with the following tentative titles:

1. The Moderate Menace

He is on the sidelines, but lurks close by awaiting his nomination to the Supreme Court. Will The Moderate Menace be nominated? Wait and see!

2. Attack of the MoveOns

No matter who is nominated the MoveOns wait to attack! Attack they will with a blind fury like you have never seen before. Can they and their evil overlord Emperor Sore be stopped?

3. Revenge of the Fifth (column)

Long having thrown off their shadowy mask, the Fifth Column joins the fray in open battle! The MSM attacks attacks attacks! They can not believe a civilized society would see such a Supreme Court Nominee that believes virtual child pornography is not as important as political speech!

4. A New Conservative

Hope is here for the suffering masses. Longing for a judge who interprets rather than contorts the law and constitution a nominee is selected who realizes the law is not about what the Privy Council of Jamaica wants.

5. The Filibuster Strikes Back

The Filibuster Returns! The weapon thought to be banned by treaty is brought back to be unleashed against the forces of good. How will they fight back? Can young Bill Cloturewalker learn enough from Rova before it is too late?

Optimistic Jawa

Yes my pet name for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi but I'm not the only one who wants him dead now. Today there were massive demonstrations in Jordan calling for Mr Zaqueery to quote "Burn in Hell". Now there is one group of chanting protesters I can agree with. Early in the year it was apparent after the bombings in Egypt that Al-Qaeda in Iraq's methods caused political problems for them. Mr. Zaqueery must have a short memory for now he has bombed Jordan. Moslems even those who sympathize with the cause or the root cause can no longer deny the pure evil of the Al-Qaeda doctrine. Even Palestine whom Al-Qaeda claims to be helping finds itself today a victim of the terrorists who kill in a cowardly random fashion. Coupled with protests in Morocco last week it is now apparent that the war on terror will be won. [emphasis added] Both our pressure and the pure evil of their tactics have put the writing on the wall. The harder they try the more people hate them including peoples all over the Middle East. The world is shrinking every day for Al-Qaeda soon they will be history.
Source: The Jawa Report - DEATH TO AL-ZAQUEERY

Has there been more noise made about this? I have a hard time telling since I listen to the news once in the morning and then after that it is music, work, music, fiddle with websites, sleep, repeat. Wouldn't surprise me though if the Mainstream Mastadons are ignoring this story. I think it is a little optimistic to start talking about winning the war on terror, but it certainly is going better than many people tend to think.

Anyway, it seems Zarqawi is not listening to Zawahiri.

Summer Brew, Refreshing Blogger Beer.

June's greatest hit:
In 1998 I was finishing up six years at the UAE University. I was in my office and two girls approached me and asked my opinion about a cartoon. They were doing a survey for a class. They presented me with an editorial cartoon that featured about six women clad in black from head to toe. Each one was labeled thusly: "shame spice", "modest spice", "abused spice" etc the caption read: "The Afghan Spice Girls". I laughed because it struck me that way but I could tell one girl was not at all amused by this cartoon. They asked me what I thought about it and why I laughed. I backpedaled a bit and stated the visual effect was humorous.

Then it struck me, they (or at least one of them was) were taking the cartoon as an attack on Islam not the Taliban as intended. I stated this to them and quickly added, if they were in Afghanistan they would not be attending ANY SCHOOL let alone a fine university. This hit home, as the one girl immediately started explaining in Arabic to her compatriot I was right (I heard her say "true" in Arabic twice).
Source: Blogger Beer - Why Soft Peddle the War On Terror. June 20, 2005

This is my response to those who demand the President make the WOT an all out war on radical Islam. When the President says War on Terror it is said with a wink-wink nudge-nudge. President Bush has cooled relations with Sinn Fein in Ireland but our nation is not expending resources to fight the IRA, the Tamil Tigers, The ETA etc.

The way I put it if President Bush says We are fighting a war on Islamic radicalism far too many Muslims will hear We are fighting a warn on Islam...blah-blah-blah [insert the sound adults on the phone would make in Charlie Brown cartoon shows] .

The coolest part is some days later I found the cartoon being discussed (this blogger beer brew is on the house!).

May 2005's Tastiest Can of Beer.

Occurred on May 23, 2005 with the Bluff, Bluster, and Blunder blog.

Primarily I was relating Wretchard's blog on the senatorial testimony of George Galloway. You recall, that don't you? Coleman and Levin were cool, calm, and collected, whilst Galloway was hot, puffy, and blustery.

We forget what is going on is more than just the exchange of school yard insult. Serious charges are being investigated and major amounts of money are in play here. George Galloway is not a major player just a lion. If our government turned around tomorrow and started to support the terrorists jihadists and Baathists, George Galloway would suddenly reverse course and support Iraq's duly elected government. George Galloway's approach can be stated on a bumper sticker "oppose the predominant paradigm".

Remember, keep you cool engaging in bluff and bluster way more often than not results in blunder. Senators Coleman and Levin did just that in they kept their cool in front of somebody relying on bluff and bluster.
Source: Blogger Beer May 23, 2005 Bluff, Bluster, and Blunder.

Wretchard was right.

On a different note, I can tell in May of 2005 it seems my writing is improving, fewer misspells and the sentences are better constructed. It also seems the daily fisking of a Post Crescent is in full swing as is the Eight Ball award. I have not handed one of those out in a while now.

Well, actually Brew, the greatest brew from April 2005.

This is what Mark Levin refers to as judges foisting their "personal policy preferences" upon the public. In fact this is exactly what happened in the recent decision to prohibit the execution of those who committed their capital offense as a minor. The majority did not like the law as it stood ("most desirable resolution") and then went fishing not only in USA law and jurisprudence but also left our boundaries and went to international sources to support their claims.

The SCOTUS essentially told us many people in the states found capital punishment in these cases as being abhorrent, then why does the legislature not abolish them? Seems to me the people were okay with that situation and it was the SCOTUS who were not happy with those laws and decided to dig up any clam they could to justify what THEY wanted.

This series of blogs was well commented on and earned Blogger Beer a hard link from a left oriented blog.

Essentially, it was commenting on the proper role and job of the courts and how our courts are being abused. One thing those of us on the right must keep in mind, we too demand for judicial activism, and in any event we should fear a right leaning judicial activists as much as lefties, why? If they rule as they desire and not as the law says then we had better hope they stay on the right and do not wander off to the left.

The Riots Have Notched Up a Bit More.

Apparently the riots in France have turned deadly.

Chirac is finally getting around to impose a curfew.

One thing that had me wondering was why people were not getting upset about their cars being burnt. Well, one report had it that essentially the only cars burning were those of the friends and neighbors (perhaps parents, brothers and sisters) of the rioters. The SEP field, somebody else's problem was put on it and no one noticed.

March 2005's Greatest Hit.

Is easily the article from the Cigar Affishianado ;-) Magazine.

I republish it in its entirety here. This was still in the early part of my blogging days and the images are large and will step on the sidebar content but so be it. This blog gets a visitor from time to time and was linked to by a Dutch cigar discussion board. Enjoy!

Francistan is Francistan, Not France.

Paul's latest commentary on the mess in France. Paul notes the people rioting see themselves as Muslim and French ergo France should be Islamic.

Unlike their fathers, who came to France from Muslim countries, accepting that, whilst remaining Muslims themselves, they had come to live in a non-Muslim country, the rioters see France as their country. They were born here. This land is their land. And since they are Muslims, this land, or at least a part of it, is Muslim as well. The society they live in is a homogeneous Islamic one. For them that is society, there is no other. Consequently there is also no question of their "leaving" that society to become part of another society, the putative Western one. "Society" is the society they live in and from which they view and interpret what goes on around them. To understand their language we must understand how they see us, where we fit in in their society. Multiculturalism does not exist: it is always a matter of several cultures living side by side in defined territories, and the laws of one culture not applying in the territories of the others.

Paul then notes that Europe itself is to blame for not working to avoid this situation. Are we in the US headed for a similar situation with our newly arrived immigrant population? I don't think so. The bulk of our immigrants share a common religious heritage if not exactly a common cultural heritage. None the less it pays to make sure our immigrants do not innudate our culture but steep in ours instead.

The Sophomoronism of the GWOT Critique.

By GWOT I mean the Global War on Terror.

A few people (we all know a few of these I am sure) like to talk about how the phrase Global War on Terror is a silly phrase as terrorism is a tactic and we are fighting an ideology. Well, no kidding Plato.

Yes, you have to understand GWOT as being delivered with a wink-wink nudge-nudge. Why? As I have argued repeatedly, many Muslims will not hear A war on Islamic Radicalism instead they will hear A war on Islam...blah-blah-blah-blah and we will turn many people who would support the cause of quashing the Taliban, Al-Qaida, etc over to the Taliban, Al-Qaida etc.

From time to time at a particular blog I read and comment on regularly one commentator likes to pretend he is Mr. Lets Kick @$$ against the Islamic radicals. However, he can not stop carping against the President because the President supposedly has no plans, and because the President typically refers to the fight as the GWOT. I suspect this fellow is lot less eager to fight against Islamic radicalism than what he fronts. In a recent discussion about what is happening in France he tips his hand as being a leftist, he is trying to sound tough without having to be tough, a toothless dog.

Tim Blair Passes On Gunshots In Francistan.

Tim Blair points out an Al-Reuter's story that the rioters are now shooting at the police in France.

HT to Tim Blair Reports of the rioters in Francistan attacking police with firearms.

Reuters passes on this report:
GRIGNY, France, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Rioters fired shots at police and set hundreds of cars ablaze in an 11th night of violence in France on Monday, hours after President Jacques Chirac vowed to restore order.

Ten policemen were injured, two of them seriously, when a group of youths fired at police with shotguns in Grigny, south of Paris, police said. One officer was treated with lead shot wounds to the throat, another suffered injuries to one leg.

"They really shot at officers. This is real, serious violence. It's not like the previous nights. I am very concerned because this is mounting," one police officer said.
Source: Reuters AlertNet - French rioters shoot at police, Chirac vows action

Interesting. Its been Eleven nights and Chirac and de Villipen still have no plan. Nevermind, their plan is probably to ask the rioters if they want 104 weeks of vacation per year.

That unfortunate police officer. I really feel for him as the French leadership is dithering about like the left imagined President Bush to be dithering after Katrina. Reports have it a certain minister is starting to gain influence.

Apparently there is one person in the Francistani government who can see what is going on and his name is Nicolas Sarkozy.

The Brussels Journal

The Fall of France
From the desk of Paul Belien on Sat, 2005-11-05 13:41

If Nicolas Sarkozy had been allowed to have his way, he could have saved France. Last Summer the outspoken minister of the Interior was France's most popular politician with his promise to restore the law of the Republic in the various virtually self-ruling immigrant areas surrounding the major French cities.

These areas, which some compare to the "millet" system of the former Ottoman Empire, where each religious community (millet) conducted its own social and cultural life in its own neighbourhoods, exist not only in France, but also in Muslim neighbourhoods in Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and other countries. ...

The experience of his youth has made Sarkozy ... virtually the only one who understands what second generation immigrants really need if they want to build a future. More important than the so-called "social benefits" - the government alms provided by welfare politicians like Chirac, Villepin and their predecessors - is the provision of law and order. This guarantees that those who create wealth do not lose it to thugs who extort and rob and burn down their properties.

Sarkozy's decision to send the police back to the suburbs which had been abandoned by previous governments ... would lead to riots was inevitable. Sarkozy knew it, and so did Chirac, Villepin and the others. ...

What happened instead was that Sarkozy's "colleagues" in government used the riots as an excuse .... Bringing down ... Sarkozy ... was told to shut up ... Villepin began a "dialogue" with the rioters. As a result the riots have spilled over from Paris to other French cities. Do not be surprised if this French epidemic soon crosses France's borders ...

As for Sarkozy, the best thing this immigrant son can do is to resign and make a bid for the 2007 presidential elections ... But this could soon change if he remains a member of a Villepin government which is clearly unwilling to abolish the current "millet" system.

Watch this Sarkozy fellow will he be the Churchill of this war?

It is not a given, as you can see from Mr. Belien's blog Mr. Sarkozy is under serious political attack from the de Villepin and Chiracs of Francistan. However much all of us joke about Cheese eating surrender monkeys (myself included) don't count the French out. The question is does the left win, or a xenophobic right, or a right that demands France be France instead of Francistan? The xenophobic politician Le Pen's popularity indicates the French public may have been closer to the end of their tolerance than many of us think.

The question then becomes which right? A right rooted in xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and anti-Americanism but otherwise no different from the current Socialists in power; or a right based on a liberal philosophy?

I have not heard anything from Le Pen in all of this, I wonder what he is saying.

Dark

The mood is as dark as the music (Kronos Quartet Winter Was Hard). The Packers lost again, next week they win. Every week from now to the end is a point of no return on a winning season. [MA elaboration, the best they can finish is 9-7 a winning record, however if they lose one more game the best they can finish is 8-8 which is neither a winning record nor a losing record]

People half-jokingly, half rationalizing say we are playing for a draft pick this year. Well, I put the fault of this season on one person and one person alone. Ted Thompson.let not one but two all-pro offensive guards go.

Reports I have heard said (IIRC it was Wahle) was gone, see ya, sayanara, so long, thanks for all the fish and so on. The other wanted to stay and was willing to talk but it sounds like this Packers outfit under Ted Thompson wasn't interested. This is too bad as the O line is weak and even a layman like myself can see it.

I suppose, the Pack has to pay for that extremely heavily backloaded contract to Brett.

Blogger.

Blogger apparently underwent an upgrade yesterday. Behind the scenes they have more commentary functions, this is probably why Blogger was unavailable for some hours yesterday.

Blogger has picked up disturbing tendency too. What happens when I click on Publish Post to publish a blog, the material that I had written blinks out. It gets posted fine but the first time this happened to me was last night after I spent quite a bit of time writing Francistan. It was very disturbing, I was concerned about a half-hour of work was gone. Anyway it isn't anything you notice (unless you blog via Blogger).

Tomorow's Greatest Hit.

Is a no brainer! Hehehehehehe!

It was linked to by a site in The Netherlands and that still lands a visitor from time to time. I will completely repost it, just copy it over into a new blog.

Hehehehe.

Francistan.

The rioting in France continues on and is spreading from Paris.

Wretchard is watching events rather closely and is shocked by the tenacity of the rioters. He figured the rioting wouldn't last long but it is and is growing.

It was this last piece of news -- that de Villepin was looking for a political formula on the 9th day of the riots -- that most disturbed me, almost as if Gamelin on the 9th day of the Blitzkrieg had only then begun looking for his map. How long will it take to come up with a plan? How long to execute?

Looking back, I think de Villepin thought he could contain the riots using police cordons as bulkheads while principally relying on his Minister of Social Cohesion to get the government's tame imams and community leaders into dampening down the riots. The French government has spent a lot of money creating quasi-governmental Islamic institutions in an attempt (in my view at least) to co-opt the more tractable leadership of the ghettos. It also had an infrastructure of social workers and government funded "community groups" which it probably felt could be relied on to bank the fires. Recent newspaper stories report how imams and community "mothers" have been marching against the violence, only to have themselves stoned and jeered. De Villepin unleashed his ultimate weapon and it turned out to be a rubber sword.

Desert Rat responds:
Fox News reports yet another night of rioting. Intafada redux.
A Cruise ship off the coast of Somalia is attacked by pirates in small open boats.
Oh me oh my
After Katrina, less than 2 days for a US Federal response was considered "SLOW",
Nine days after Paris began to burn Mr de Villepin has a meeting. Mike Brown should be proud, he was only a day behind the curve, not over a week.
Now as the violence extends across France, as reports of riots trickle in from across western Europe, there is, I must admit, a feeling of smug satisfaction.

Can't wait to see how France defines Peace and Justice.
Source: Desert Rat's Commentary to the Belmont Club's Once in France

More than a few commentators are expressing feelings of schadenfreude, but we must not wallow in cheap schadenfreude, we must hope France can quell the riots and recognize what brought them on.

What brought them on? I have a hard time believing an unsustainable social safety net is blameless. Another common theme is the idea of the millet. the millet was essentially an Ottoman creation where each religious community would essentially be left to rule on its own and to settle all internal affairs as it saw fit. According to an article quoted by Wretchard (see the blog above) the areas around the major cities broke down into these millets with Islamic rule in some millets and French in others.

As the feudal system crumbled, control over such a vast domain became increasingly problematic. Because a standing army would have been prohibitively expensive, non-Muslims were assigned as armatoliks, or armed guards, of specified areas and paid from local taxes. This system was abused flagrantly by independent groups of armed men, some with official sanction and some without, who roamed the countryside and abused the peasant population.
Source: The Nature of Ottoman Rule

This time the Muslims are the armatoliks and are acting quite without official sanction. The question is how is France going to put them down and how will they prevent future riots? There are two possible responses I see.

One is going into the millets and enforcing egalite, liberte, and fraternitie as the French understand it. The second response is to dole out more unsustainable social benefits (how about a 20 hour workweek hey rioting takes a lot of time, if they are working to feed, clothe and shelter themselves they can't riot) and to extend more autonomy to the millets.

I fear those in France who favor the later response are gaining the upper hand.

Believe it or not France is generally with us in the GWOT and having France turn into Francistan would make things much worse.
